Itinerary
Day 1 & 2: Welcome on board in Venice This Italy cruise package departs from Venice, with boarding beginning in the morning to afternoon on day 1 of your cruise. You will stay in Venice overnight, giving you every opportunity to discover the magical attractions, such as the vibrancy of the Grand Canal, which is lined with decadent palaces that nod to Venice’s rich past, and the iconic Venetian gondolas, which bob serenely along the canals. Venice has a wealth of attractions to enjoy and is the perfect place if you enjoy dynamic architecture – we highly recommend visiting Doge’s Palace, which is full of decadence and splendor, and don’t miss out on St Mark’s Square with its glorious Golden Basilica. And then there is the Rialto Bridge, as well as Venice’s hidden attractions, such as Teatro La Fenice and Scala del Bovolo. If you want to discover other delights in the Venetian Lagoon, we highly recommend taking a boat tour to Murano, Burano and Torcello, which are three islands nestled in the Venetian Lagoon where you can discover an authentic way of Venetian life and local crafts, including glass-blowing and lace-making.
Complimentary shore excursion: As a part of your standard Italy cruise package you can enjoy one shore excursion arranged by Vikings Ocean Cruises in each of the ports visited. Your complimentary tour in Venice is At a Glance: St Mark’s Square, which is a transfer from Venice’s port to the renowned piazza for a self-guided visit. For additional options, please click on the “Tours & Excursions” tab at the top of this page.
Day 3: Chase waterfalls in Šibenik After discovering the delights of Venice, this unique cruise experience gives you the opportunity to discover one of Croatia’s oldest cities with a visit to Šibenik on the Dalmatian Coast. As you approach Šibenik, you will cruise through the scenic St Anthony Channel, where you will be able to absorb stunning sea vistas and coastal landscapes, before arriving at the port of Šibenik. The city sits on the Krka River and is UNESCO protected thanks to its remarkably preserved Old Town, which is simply a joy to wander around. Here, you will find fascinating narrow streets of cobblestone, intriguing mediaeval houses and gothic churches, and you can also admire the four historic fortresses that guard the city. We highly recommend stopping to see St James Cathedral, which is a wonder of the Renaissance era, and for something truly special, take a trip to the impressive waterfalls on the Krka River for images that will stay with you for a lifetime.
Complimentary shore excursion: Your complimentary tour in Šibenik is a Šibenik Promenade, which includes a visit to St Jacob’s Cathedral – a jewel of the Dalmatian coast. For additional options, please click on the “Tours & Excursions” tab at the top of this page.
Day 4: Visit a fairytale town from Bari Bari in Puglia in South Italy is one of the country’s most refined cities, featuring palm-tree-lined boulevards and salmon-pink architecture that contrasts perfectly with the architectural styles that you will have already enjoyed in the other regions of Italy as a part of this cruise package. We love the honey-tone buildings that feature fairytale-like balconies adorned with flowers and ivy, as well as the spacious courtyards where the locals meet to chat over a rich espresso. While in Bari, don’t miss seeing the Norman-Swabian castle, the splendid Romanesque Basilica of St Nicholas and the Petruzzelli Theater, one of Italy’s most important opera houses. Or, for something truly magical, we recommend taking a day trip to Alberobello, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its charming trulli houses, which are fairytale-like dwellings with conical roofs that date back to the 14th century. Complimentary shore excursion: Your complimentary tour in Bari is the popular Bari Walking Tour, which allows you to discover the city on foot with an expert guide. For additional options, please click on the “Tours & Excursions” tab at the top of this page.
Day 5: Step back in time in Crotone Crotone is one of Italy’s hidden gems, where you can discover an authentic sort of Italian culture on day 5 of your Italy cruise. It was founded as a Greek colony in 710 BC and was once the home of Greek mathematician Pythagoras. It boasts an overwhelming array of archaeological treasures, making it a wonderful treat for those with an interest in ancient history. Of the wealth of city attractions to enjoy, we recommend visiting the neoclassical Cathedral, the Pythagoras Museum and Gardens, and Crotone Castle. Note that your standard package includes a walking tour of Crotone, which takes you by coach to Piazza Pythagoras, from where you can enjoy a stroll through Crotone, seeing Piazza Duomo, the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the National Archaeological Museum. The tour ends with a visit to Charles V Castle and free time to explore the market and buy gifts. Complimentary shore excursion: As indicated, your complimentary tour in Crotone is the Crotone Highlights tour, which gives you the chance to discover the ancient culture of this hidden gem on a relaxing walking tour. For additional options, please click on the “Tours & Excursions” tab at the top of this page.
Day 6: Soak up the charm of Sicilian culture in Messina Today you will continue on a journey of discovery to the cultural island of Sicily, which sits off Italy’s “toe”. The Viking Ocean Cruises ship docks at the port town of Messina, which is celebrated as one of Europe’s top cities. The city is home to a diversity of cultures represented in the varying architectural styles, particularly Spanish-inspired buildings since Messina fell under Spain’s purview in the 17th century prior to its union with mainland Italy. Be sure not to miss the Renaissance-style Cathedral and bell tower, and the ornate Porta Grazia gate, which are Messina’s main attractions. While the unique buildings are certainly a joy to discover, Messina’s glorious landscape is something that must be savoured, perhaps on a relaxing stroll along the coast, allowing you to appreciate the coastal scenes defined by a mountain backdrop that rolls into the glistening waters of the sea. Complimentary shore excursion: Your complimentary tour in Messina is the Messina & its Treasures tour, which includes the major architectural and artistic treasures of this charming city. For additional options, please click on the “Tours & Excursions” tab at the top of this page.
Day 7: Sample Neapolitan pizza in its birthplace On the last full day of your Italy cruise, you will dock at Naples – a famous city in South Italy that is known as the birthplace of pizza. As well as its culinary history, Naples has some beautiful and diverse architecture that you can enjoy and we recommend seeing Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace of the King of Naples in particular. Alternatively, if you would like to explore the cultural attractions of the region, we recommend taking a day trip to Pompeii and/or Herculaneum, which are two of the world’s most important archaeological sites. These ancient cities were lost for nearly 1500 years following an historic volcanic eruption in 79 AD that left them buried beneath ash and lava, which served to preserve the cities, and their unfortunate inhabitants, in great detail. If that’s not your thing then perhaps you would prefer to explore the delights of Capri – the so-called Pearl of the Mediterranean that is known as one of South Italy’s most exclusive holiday resorts, featuring idyllic island sights and magical sea caves. Complimentary shore excursion: In Naples, you can enjoy the Panoramic Tour of Naples, which is a driving tour that features the highlights of this historic city. For additional options, please click on the “Tours & Excursions” tab at the top of this page.
Day 8: Departure in Civitavecchia near Rome This Italy cruise package ends in Civitavecchia, near Rome, with disembarkation beginning at 8 am. Civitavecchia is an historic port town with roots dating back to Etruscan times and has many intriguing attractions that you can enjoy, such as Forte Michelangelo, Terme Taurine and Cattedrale di San Francesco. There is also a wealth of Roman and Vatican architecture to enjoy, as well as fascinating museums. Being so close to the Eternal City, we highly recommend visiting Rome to enjoy the iconic attractions, including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Vatican City, as well as the classic architecture, including the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. For something really special, click on the “Tours & Excursions” tab at the top of this page to learn more about our VIP Rome tours, which can be added to your custom-made Italy cruise package and allow you to discover the famous attractions with a highly qualified private guide.
